- To play a tape, you need a VCR compatible with the format, either PAL for
- PAL tapes, or NTSC for NTSC tapes, or a dual-standards type.
-
- A 1084 monitor (or equivalent) can display either type of resolution, but most
- TV sets cannot.
-
- A dual-standards type of VCR is relatively expensive, and cheap ones don't do
- a good job of conversion, but they are the least expensive way to handle this.
-
- Or, pay a service to do the conversion. It isn't cheap usually, but you may
- get better results than a cheap standards-conversion VCR.
-
- If you have a PAL VCR, you can use it to play PAL tapes, and view them in
- perfect quality on a monitor or TV capable of PAL display. This may be a
- cheaper option than buying a dual-standards unit. You'll need a power adapter
- to use in in CA (or USA), but it is another alternative.
-
- You must have a standards converter in order to copy the tape to the other
- format. PAL is 625 lines at 25 frames per second, NTSC is 525 lines at 30
- frames per second, and a standards converter must digitize the video (like a
- TBC) in order to do the conversion; and to do so in real time AND rescale the
- video with decent quality is a real trick.
